ATI 98-02 F Body - I have a head unit, what else do I need?
- More Information
Head units: The 98-02 F Body ProCharger brackets are designed to only use ProCharger self contained head units. They will not work with any of the ProCharger non self contained head units, such as a P600B. They will not work with other brands of head units either. A P-1SC through an F-2 will physically bolt up to the 98-02 ProCharger F Body bracket.
ProCharger head units are designed to be in a standard rotation or a reverse rotation, the 98-02 F Body ProCharger bracket places the head unit in a reverse rotation orientation. You cannot use a standard rotation head unit with this combination as the blower will not make any boost. It would be cost prohibitive to send in a standard rotatation head unit to have it made into a reverse rotation. How do you know what you have? The easiest thing to do is to write down the serial number found on the tag that is on the head unit, and call ProCharger at 913 338-2886. ProCharger can tell you which rotation the head unit is, and the history of it. You can also e-mail me at bob@brutespeed.com and give me the serial number and I will find out what you have.
Belt drive: The 98-02 F Body ProCharger kits use a separate belt to drive the blower off the crankshaft. ProCharger bolts a pulley to the harmonic balancer and bolts a pulley to the head unit, and a serpentine belt is used. When ProCharger first came out with the 98-02 F Body kits a six rib wide belt was the only belt width offered. Approx. five years later an eight rib wide belt option became available. Recently a ten rib option became available which is recommended for higher hp builds.
Six Rib Crank Pulley:
The six rib assembly is the cheapest way to go. We used it on my '99 Z28 Camaro back in 2003 with a D-1SC at 7 psi of boost, the eight rib wasn't available back then. If you are considering boosting past 8 psi I recommend going with the 8 rib assembly. The ProCharger six rib crank pulley bolts to the factory harmonic balancer, it will not fit up to any aftermarket balancers. This crank pulley has three pins on it that fit into slots on the factory balancer. A ProCharger supplied crank bolt is used to secure the crank pulley to the balancer. You need to use loc-tite on this bolt, this is mandatory as I have seen these crank pulleys fall off.
There are several problems that I have found over the years with this six rib combination. The pins on the 6 rib crank pulley tend to bend over time due to the power required to spin the blower. The ProCharger 6 rib crank pulley is a 6.0" diameter, a larger crank pulley would spin the blower faster without having to use as small of a pulley on the blower. With the combination of the smaller 6.0 diameter crank pulley and the narrower six rib belt, boost is limited to around 8 psi as belt slippage becomes a problem when smaller diameter blower pulleys are used.

Eight Rib Crank Pulley:
The eight rib belt assembly requires the harmonic balancer to be replaced by one made by a company called ATI Performance Products, pn# 918853. The ProCharger 8 rib crank pulley bolts to this balancer with three bolts. I have not had any problems with this crank pulley coming loose from the balancer, the three bolts do a great job of securing the crank pulley. The ProCharger eight rib crank pulleys are available in 7.65" and 8.00" diameters. I also sell one made by CBR that is an 8.65" diameter. all of the eight rib crank pulleys are much larger than the six rib crank pulley.

Ten Rib Crank Pulley:
The ten rib belt assembly requires the harmonic balancer to be replaced by one made by a company called ATI Performance Products, pn# 918853, or one made by Innovators West, pn# 830. The ProCharger 10 rib crank pulley bolts to this balancer with three bolts. I have not had any problems with this crank pulley coming loose from the balancer, the three bolts do a great job of securing the crank pulley. The ProCharger ten rib crank pulleys are available in 7.65" and 8.00" diameters.

Crank pinning kit:
This crank pinning kit is recommended when using a D-1SC or larger head unit. This kit will prevent the harmonic balancer from slipping on the crankshaft.

J Bracket:
The 98-02 F Body ProCharger kits use what is commonly referred to as a "J Bracket", as that is what is looks like. ProCharger's original six and eight rib brackets used a tensioner that was adjusted with a bolt, this tensioner was not spring loaded. At high rpm the blower belt can get what I call whippage, it can be seen on the dyno. This can cause the belt to slip on the blower pulley. Spring loaded tensioners take up this slack, which prevents the dreaded belt slip.
The aftermarket saw a need for a bracket with a spring loaded tensioner for these ProCharger kits, for when people are looking to boost past 12 psi, as the older ProCharger 8 rib bracket will cause belt slippage problems.
SDCE is a company that takes the ProCharger bracket and modifies it with a spring loaded tensioner, their kit includes a 7.25 crank pulley in able for it's belt to clear the water pump.
Chris Oldenhouse designed a new bracket with a spring loaded tensioner. Chris named this bracket "Aster" and it was sold exclusively through us at Brute Speed. This bracket requires using the Corvette LS2 water pump with the pully moved 11/32 of an inch, in doing so the larger ProCharger 7.65 crank pulley is used. This bracket design has enabled people to boost 18 to 20 psi without belt slippage with F series blowers. ProCharger has released a new bracket design with a heavy duty tensioner, this new design is available in eight and ten rib. With the release of this new ProCharger design, I have quit selling the Aster bracket.

Fuel Injectors:
You have to use larger fuel injectors with a boosted engine unless you have one of the newer E85 capable engines that come with larger injectors. 60lb per hr fuel injectors are the norm these days now that injectors prices have come down. I would not use 42lb injectors unless you already have them and you're only going to run 7 psi of boost on a basically stock engine. If you have an engine with a forged bottom end and you're planning on running more than 12 psi then I would go with at least 80lb injectors. 80lb injectors are roughly the same price as 60lb injectors and with a good tune, the idle and low end response is about the same.

Fuel Pump:
Stock LS1 fuel pumps are not going to be adequate unless an inline pump is added, or the factory pump is replaced with a larger pump. The easiest method is to added ProChargers frame mounted inline pump.http://shop.brutespeed.com/ATI-3GJFP-001-Pro-Pump-Inline-HP-Fuel-Pump-3-8-Complete-ATI-3GJFP-001.htm
